A month ago, on May 7 2021, Colonial Pipeline fell victim to a cyberattack. It forced the company to immediately shut down the operation and freeze IT systems, halting all pipeline operations for the time being. Colonial Pipeline is one of the largest pipeline companies that move gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from the US Gulf Coast to the US East Coast market. This cyberattack is significant as there will likely be fluctuations in fuel prices and further price increases.
Cyber Attackers frequently leverage publicized current news events to get users to click on malicious emails and websites. The malicious emails and links take people to fake websites with deceiving characteristics. By using the target company’s logo and graphics, cybercriminals could make fake websites appear more plausible. The attackers even made the fake emails look legitimate, causing many employees to download a “ransomware update” disguised as malware. As a result, businesses need to have cybersecurity insurance for events like these. No one is immune to cyberattacks, so it is always nice to have that extra layer of protection.
